Hi guys,

I have a squeak / rubbing noise coming from the left hand front wheel but only when the car fully warms up to temperature!  Please see the video below, and excuse wind noise:

I have taken the brake pads out on this side and cleaned it.  Disk is quite old but has plenty of wear left, pads were fine.

The pistons were very hard to push back in and couldn't get them back in fully.  Pads were very hard to get out, but went back in a lot easier.

I couldn't see any signs of driveshaft fouling the lower arm or anything else that could be making the noise.

Anyone got any suggestions as to what I could look at next?  The confusing bit is why it only makes the noise when car is fully warm.

Many thanks,

Duncan

Could be seized caliper pistons, if the pads don't back off the friction will create heat expansion that makes the binding worse. There'd be other symptoms: a bit of a loss in performance, resistance to rolling, possibly pulling on the steering, definitely more heat to be felt around the wheel on the offending side.

Couldn't really tell much from the vid, is it regular & speed related?

Hi Ethel,

Sticking pistons was something I was thinking also judging how much force I needed to exert to get them back in place?, but couldn't feel the wheel nor brakes being particularly hot after a run.

The noise is regular and seems to go away when you get above 15-20mph, but it may be that you just can't hear it at that speed with engine/wind noise etc.

Someone else mentioned it could be the wheel bearings, due to it happening when it gets hot.  Does this make sense?

Don't want to have to strip it all down un necessarily  O_O

Wheel bearings tend to be more of a rumbling noise. You could try steering L&R sharply several times, it can push the pads back with the discs by taking up any slack in the wheel bearings. Also applying the brakes would do the opposite & either could alter the symptom.

If you can find somewhere quiet you could turn the engine off & coast to make a clearer recording.

Hi Ethel,

I'll try and get a recording whilst coasting along and upload it soon.  I agree it's not what I'd class as a typical wheel bearing noise though.  Maybe they're just starting to go.

Applying the brakes doesn't alter the sound and stamping on the anchors doesn't make any difference.  Brakes don't feel hot after a run, which makes me wonder

whether they are really binding.

I was thinking I could jack the car up and take the pads out whilst it's still warm and see if the noise goes away on wheel rotation, this would clarify whether it's brakes or bearings I guess?

I jacked the car up whilst it was hot today and spun the wheel, could clearly hear the squeak coming from the inner cv boot. Sounded like a rubber squeak but couldn’t see it catching or anything. Any ideas? Does it mean I need a new pot joint?

Hi, I've got the exact same sound, did you manage to fix it?

Hi, sorry for the delayed reply only just seen this.

Yes I believe it was the inner CV boot rubbers.  Spraying some silicon spray or other rubber friendly lubricant around there, and also in between the small gap between the pot joint and

the driveshaft itself, seemed to cure it.  I did then also go on to replace the CV boots at a later date, although they didn't seem too bad.

Hope this helps,

Duncan
