Hi Guys

I have a 1964 Riley Elf 998cc with a pre-verto clutch.

While replacing the idler bearing I noticed that the ring gear is over half worn. This is the 1/2 inch style ring gear and I have obtained a replacement from Somerford mini spares.

By heating the current ring gear and giving it a few taps I haven't been able to remove it.  Is there a technique to do so?

To fit the replacement do you have to heat it and then place it on the correct way round?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks

The usual way to remove the old ring gear is to split it with a Cold Chisel. I find drilling a few 3 mm holes in the root between 2 teeth then hitting it with the chisel makes this much easier.

Heating the old one also heats the flywheel, and the will both expand together.

Yep just smack it off as spider suggests ....and to refit a new one clean up the flywheel  then into the freezer overnight and new ring gear in the oven  - goes on surprisingly easily...wear heatproof gloves obvs :-)

Forgot that little detail ....  I was once presented with a nicely frozen wheel bearing at ungodly o'clock one morning with a slightly annoyed quizzical expression..... nothing like cooking up a previously oiled component - adds a nice tang to a pizza - was wondering why I got divorced lol

Make sure you fit it the right way around. If you put it on incorrectly, you will end up buying another new one (been there, done that!!).

Mine has admitted defeat.  She's used to flywheel housings in the oven and gearbox casings in the dishwasher.

want to have a go at changing the ring gear some time. My fear is it gets stuck part way on.

I haven't tried the Oven as the other guys have suggested, but may try that next time, sounds an easy way to go.

The 'trick' is to have everything set up before starting. I heat the new Ring Gear with LPG Torch with a big 32 mm nozzle, I find it has a better flame for doing this type of heating where I need a broad flame for heating the entire gear rather than a small intense pin point of an Oxy, and the LPG is loads cheaper. I set the ring gear up before heating, make sure it's the right way around, on some spacers under it so that the heat isn't drawn away from it by what it's sitting on and also when putting the flywheel in to it, that it goes all the way home. I clean the Register in the Flywheel, then put it in the freezer too. I heat the Ring Gear to a light Blue Colour then drop the Flywheel in to it. I haven't had an issue doing them this way or any 'close calls' however If it got stuck before getting all the way home, you could press it that last bit. If you think there's a risk of it working loose (this is more of an issue with inertia type starter motors), you could then fix it in position with 3 short welding tacs.
