"Racing driver and Top Gear star Sabine Schmitz has died, aged 51. The German, widely known as the "Queen of the Nürburgring", had suffered a long illness with cancer. A statement issued by the famous German racetrack said: "The Nürburgring has lost its most famous female racing driver."

I read this this morning. Really very very sad. I found her personality infectious. Such a shame.

Brilliant talent and seemed a genuinely lovely lady. Always thought F1 should have snapped her up. Another star gone too soon.

Yes, very sad. Such a funny lady with a great personality and she was one awesome driver. There’s far too many people dying far too young of this dreadful disease. RIP Sabine.

...I remember her while helping a Mini team at the 24h 1998 as we were sharing the same pit with Johannes Scheid's semi-works BMW. Sabine then was married and carried the surname Reck which she later changed back to her birthname Schmitz. The BMW was competing for the overall placing at that time, as no GTs were permitted then. Here she was giving an interview for the circuit speaker's PA.

Then a pic of our MTS-Mini-Team.
