well hello.

yet again somethign has gone wrong, just had all my brakes overhauled and now my clutch is buggering.

oh the joy of owning a mini.

anywho, over the past couple of days i've noticed play in my clutch, when the pedal is not depressed at all. i thought nothing of it, until last night and tonight.

basically, my bite point has moved from the top of the clutch, to about 1mm off of the floor when i bring my foot up. also, its pretty hard to get in gear, and going from 3rd to second is a nightmare, as well as 2nd to 1st.

it crunches unless i come to a complete stop, usually i can change down from 3rd to second at about 25 ish.

its made it a bar steward to drive, i fear it will become impossible soon because of the bite point.

had a play around, doesnt appear to be leaking from anywhere, all looks fairly normal to me.

i have a verto clutch, and i've never touched it so don't see why it would be needing any adjustment.

as for the play in the pedal, i felt it up (which was sticky) and the pin (clevis?) is rattling around and spins i think, near enough impossible to see it though.

the video on this page: http://www.theminifo...x...c=32694&hl=

is kind of like what im experiancing pedal wise.

i DO have resistance in the pedal though, so i don't think it needs bleeding either.

please help me, im already in debt because of problems, and cant afford for anything major to happen.

thanks,
Stef

sounds like the thrust bearing, which is located in the clutch housing will cost around £10, should not take long to check.

Bleed the system first as that is the much much easier job !!!

Also check for any fluid leaks around the slave cylinder !

ok cool, should be easy enough to do that. im pretty sure there isnt any leaks. i cant see any fluid anywhere.

what should i be lubing up all the bits on the clutch housing with?

is the thrust bearing inside the shaft with the big nut on the end?

and is it an easy job or is it engine out garage job?

does anyone have anymore ideas about the play in the pedal, do i need a new pin?

thanks guys

If you are not in a Mini Club, you should join one, save you a lot of hassle, there are always people who will 'talk' you through. If I remove a clutch or even just the cover, it pays to replace the clevis pins as they wear 'orribly and are cheap. If you have mechanical knowledge and a Manual, you will be able to do it yourself and 'no' the engine does not have to come out. Check all the above first, (hydraulics) because the operating arm does not seem to be getting its full travel. You need two people, one to watch the clutch oerating arm and one to say when they are pushing the pedal down from its 'bite point' See if the two move together :D

well i've only heard of one club round here and thats got a lot of binis in it.

anywho im gonna go look at the mini in a minute when i can be arsed to get out of bed.

so how can i tell if i'm not getting enough travel? i know i'm not, but i dont know what its supposed to look like.

i've got a haynes, i find it helps more just to go out and fiddle with things really.

i'm gonna rip the seats out and see whats up with the pedal anyway.

well, i managed to fix it. thank god it wasnt the bearing, would have been a nightmare to get apart.

the rubber seal type thing thats on the slave cylinder that the pushrod goes into had come off the housing on the slave, so i cleaned it all up and managed to get it back on (which is hassle)

bled it, and to my surprise a puss coloured goo came out to start with, with lots of big air bubbles. topped it all up nicely and now the clutch works better than it did when i got it!

i suspect there may be a slight leak by the slave somewhere, but its fine for now, so if it happens again i guess i'll just pop a new slave on it.

thanks very much for all the help guys, i wouldnt still own a mini ifit wasnt for this forum!
