Hello there,

I’ve just overhauled the front and rear subframes on my 84 Mayfair and got her running again. I have a strange issue where when I’m cornering she bogs down, as soon as you straighten up the wheel she comes back to life again? Any idea why? Plenty of fuel in the tank, hoses and pipes are all good (all of it aside of the metal pipe underneath is new). It did it before I took it off the road, but having driven it today it’s reminded me how annoying it is, looking to get it solved!

Thanks!

Prob worth checking the float in the Carb as the first point of call..

I put a new needle/seat in there, float looked fine.

Does it bog down regardless of which way you are cornering or does it only happen in one direction...how full is the float chamber resevoir.. could be that the float and needle is shutting off before the bowl is sufficiently full of fuel

Yeah, either direction.

Yeah, either direction, float chamber has always been full whenever I’ve checked, but obviously that’s after a period of being stationary.

There is a possibility it could be electrical. If you have a corroded or partially broken wire/corrector at the fuse box or coil then it could be making a bad connection in anything other than a straight line.

I suffered this about 20 years ago (before I did all my own work on the car), suffering over a dozen breakdowns and spending hundreds at garages who were insistent that it was a fuel system fault. My dad eventually found that a spade connector had corroded; it looked fine from the outside but if you took the boot off it it was green and split.

Worth a check......

Really interesting, thank you. The previous owner really butchered the electrics, I’ve had to fix so much already - didn’t think of an electrical issue for this problem - will go see what more dodgy workmanship I can find.

Try looking at the rev counter (if fitted) when the car gives the problem...

small spikes are a fuel issue
Large spikes(200-1000rpm usually) are electrical.

I doubt it will work as this is usually only to diagnose coil failure but its worth putting into the hat, happy to be corrected if it won't help though!

If you have access to crimping tools, it may be worth checking the connections
