Just fitted a new speedo cable and it whines a bit. I put a bit of LM grease when fitting is that the right type?

The speedo cable can get surprisingly warm with friction and of course the exhaust manifold so a bit of high melting grease would be better although LM is good up to 130 degrees centigrade so you should be fine.

I usually just give it a wipe with 20/50.

Make sure you don`t get any lube as high as the speedo head as it won`t like it !

Never had one whine so I would make sure the cable is fully located in both housings particularly the gearbox end as it is easy to cross thread when working in the engine bay and the inner cable may just be catching on the drive spindle.

Give the outer cable a push and a pull and there should be no movement.

If you spent your life inside a confined space being spun at crazy speeds, I'm sure you'd do more than whine :D

I give them a lick of light general purpose grease ;D
