Good morning guys, I’m looking for some advice on a 1275 A+ metro engine that I’m stripping down. This is engine is a bit of an unknown with regards to mileage etc. It came from a metro, engine number 12HD24. I have removed the head to get an idea of cylinder and valve condition. I wondered if someone could give me their opinion on the cylinder bores. Measurements are yet to be done but I think it’s clear that it needs some work done to the bores.

Difficult to tell from photos .. but I wouldn't be surprised if that would need a rebore. There are some obvious scratches (how deep?) and is there a prominent step at the top of the bore (feel with your finger tip/finger nail).

You could just take it to an engineering company and ask their advise.

Condition is properly assess by measurement. This involves stripping g cleaning and measuring. The cylinder head needs a a good clean also before it’s condition can be assessed.

The cylinders ‘looks’ make me want to inspect further. I would not be fitting in his without further examination.

Get a machine shop to measure up and price a set of pistons for next size bore. Get the head refurbished and skimmed, also get unleaded valve seats fitted if possible

You really can't tell about wear from the pics. I suppose it depends what you want to achieve with the engine? If you just want it to run OK for now then maybe clean everything up and as long as there is no big ridge in the cylinder wall give it a whirl - it's just going to cost you a bit of time and the price of a few gaskets. But if you want to be assured of good power, low oil consumption, sensible emissions and all that stuff then you will need to measure and then decide.

If nothing else you know that you have the standard sized pistons in there so plenty of scope for an overbore if you need it!

To be honest, it is not really worth 'b*******g about' with it. By the time you have had the bores measured and then honed, bought new rings and re-fitted it with new bottom end bearings, etc, you might as well get a set of pistons and have it properly rebored to the next size up. Thay way you know it will be good and with a refurbished head/valves/valve guides it will be as a new engine.

In the past I have seen too many people try to 'save' old engines by not re-boring, using other old parts and then having to do another full build a few months later. I have been guilty of that many years ago and learned the hard way.

Thanks to everyone for taking the time to reply. I think I know the route that has to be taken but you guys have given me the kick needed to just do it properly instead of trying to mend and make do.
Once Iv finished building the engine stand I’ll get it stripped down and taken to the machine shop for them to assess what the best course of action is.

If there had been less corrosion towards the top of each cylinder I may have tidied up the head and thrown her in, but it’s definitely a false economy.

Looking through your photos, no 2 ways about it, it needs a rebore !
