Newbie, just got a 1991 998cc Japanese Mini.  I wanted to brighten up the engine bay a bit.  Are rocker covers universal?  I saw this on auction here in Japan.  It doesn't say if it's for 1275 or 998...so I was wondering if they're all the same basically.  You guys know of any fit/clearance issues or if certain covers are for certain engines?  Think it will fit okay?  Take a look at the pic below.  I like the look of this one, especially with the filler in the center.

Also, I assume a new gasket is in order if I do change.  Cork or silicone better?  Is the gasket sealant stuff necessary, or just a snug fit?  From most vids I've seen, no one uses any gasket sealant.

Cheers for any advice!!!

I have that one on my 998 it’s spot on. They are pretty much universal unless you have high lift rockers. Metro one as in pic is much better in my opinion. I use cork gaskets and never really has an issue. Can use sealant on the rocker side so you don’t have to replace gasket every time they actually hold up quite well

Near enough, that type was used on the MG Metro.

The bottom is just machined flat, so the gasket doesn't seat as well as on the pressed steel type, gluing the gasket to the cover first can be useful, but most problems are caused by overtightening the tube nuts.

Depending what's available locally it may make sense to replace all the fitting hardware.

The only difference I'm aware of it 11 stud 1275 heads will need the cover relieved at each end to avoid the stud/bolt.

As the guys have said they are pretty much all the same and will all fit on a standard non hi lift rocker setup.

I use the old blue hylormar and smear it on the rocker cover gasket area only. Let it go off / dry then put the gasket on the rover cover. I then put it on a flat clean surface gasket down and balance a brick on the cover and leave it to properly dry / set.

Make sure the head mating surface is scrupously clean and dry, and only tighten down the rocker cover enough to stop any leaks.

This way when you want to do the tappets the cover lifts off with gasket intact stuck to the cover, so you should not have to replace it every time you remove the cover.

I would use the standard cork gasket on the alloy cover as the silicon ones move about to easily as there are no tabs to retain it in place.

There is a neat trick using sealant on one side of the gasket and grease on the other to ensure it seals - dklawson details it well here:

Save the old valve cover to use as a 'mold' to store a couple of spare cork gaskets.  Slide them down over the top, against the lip.  Doing so will stretch them out a bit and fit perfectly when you need them.
