Hello all,
A while ago I purchased some 10 inch steel wheels as the plan is to change mine from 12 to 10

Didn’t check the wheels when they arrived and thought I’d take a look today as I have a week off work so could order parts and look to get the mini on the road for the summer... however! 2 of the wheels have a little chunk missing and 3 round knob type things on them... I haven’t ever paid enough attention to know if this is normal as the missing bits have been painted over so I assume we’re used like this... my head tells me that a missing bit of wheel isn’t great but I’d appreciate your knowledge!

2 wheels look normal
2 have almost identical little chunks missing

Thanks

I do not believe that chunk missing is normal at all.. I have never seen them like that, and they may well be dangerous and possibly an MOT failure.. they may be ok on the rear I would not be happy with them on the front though

Just had a flick through eBay to see what others look like and found these.

Description says slit in centre bore for trailer.

So I assume at some point these wheels were used for a trailer.. not sure what the slit would achieve on a hub...
any idea what the 3 knobby bits are all about

(Photo is a random eBay listing and not my wheels)

The notch in the centre has been made to clear the grease nipple on the hub of a trailer suspension unit. The three round knobs have likely been added to fit a hub cap different from the standard Mini ones.

My first thought was trailer wheels too.

It does look like the slots could've been ground in a Mini wheel, but I don't recognise the round bosses either.

Any stamped in narkings & have you worked out what the offset is?

No obvious markings or stamp on the wheels that I can see. Not sure on offset but the tyres fitted are 145/80/10 if that helps

I reckon they're Mini wheels, but measuring the offset would give you something to compare. Might be a clue on the back if the bosses are added, can't imagine them being original when there are Mini style pressed in hubcap lugs.

Cant see anything critical being effected, but you could weld up the slots.

Thanks, I think I’ll shove them on the back. Or before I take it for the MOT I’ll take the wheels to the garage and see if they consider it a pass. Obviously with the hub caps on they won’t see and technically shouldn’t remove the hub caps to check but I’d prefer me and the mini to be safe! A blob of weld ground to shape sounds like a good peace of mind plan if I stick with these wheels

It's hard to see how they'd see any stress inside the pcd of the studs, but no accounting for how a tester could apply the rules. If you're swapping from 12's - you're aware the wheel nuts changed with later 12 inch steelies?

Thanks, didn’t know that! Assumed a wheel nut was a wheel nut! Shall add these to the shopping list

They are trailer and/or caravan wheels; some small touring caravans in the 1960's and 70's used Mini wheels with a more domed style of hub cap. Probably made by Dunlop or Rubery Owen and occasionally you get them with a BMC/BL part number on them!
