I have a 95 cooper SPI with some form of quick shift or short linkage. The previous owner said this was a factory option but there is no paperwork for this.

How would I know exactly what's fitted, or was this never a factory option anyway?

I have thought about replacing the shifter for a KAD one with the reverse lift collar. I believe they sell a normal shifter as well as a short shifter and didn't want to get the wrong thing.

That's a factory shift knob from a late carb car

How big does the gate feel between gears?

And how much throw is there?

As standard, there is a fairly large gate between 1st,2nd and 3rd,4th and quite a long throw.

My suspicions is that what you have is nothing more than a standard selector that's been cut down

there is 9cm between 1&2 / 3&4.

the top of the knob is 30cm from the carpet

Unfortunately that tells us nothing as we can’t actually see the short shift kit. Pull up the carpet and gearstick gaiter so we can see it and advise you.

It possibly has got a quickshift fitted (not factory) as the lever looks to be chrome plated.

You'd need to remove the gaiter (and any foam sound deadening underneath) and send a picture of the mechanism.

Looks like the levers been cut down/shortened,hence the feeling of a short shifter,
We were doing this in the mid 80s :-)
