It is not so much the length, it is he profile of the needle. They are specific a little with 44,s
What is the little tag indicating, it should read FZX then a series of numbers
Metro 44,s did not use BCE needles
BCE needles run 6 litre engines, no wonder you got problems.

I can go and measure one if it'd help? But in the meantime, recently you've mentioned an HIF38, a 998cc engine with an AAU needle, what do you actually have and what are you trying to achieve?

If it's a swing needle, as it should be, it neds to be long enough to stay in the jet at full piston lift.
Edit: if you mean it moves side to side, it's supposed to.

The needle just moved now it is even with the bracket.
Yes the needle should move. They are sprung.
What bracket it should not be near any brackets.
as to length is should be the same length as any other HIF44 needle.
if it does not look broken it will be the correct length.
all the parts present?

Measured a other needle and set the bce to this 61.3mm.

No idea what you are measuring but that is not how you set up an SU carb.
Fit spring on to needle. Place in guide. Fit to piston and position it flush then tighten grubscrew.
again see link above.

My research shows those numbers to be pretty close to perfect for idle and full power, but what are the AFR numbers for cruise and part throttle? There are so many needles, I try to get the idle mixture close to what it should be and adjust from there to get the correct mixture for the engine speed that I use the most. 12.5 is fine for full throttle but who, other than racers, are at full throttle all of the time?
