Mates,

So, I'm driving around today (1991 998 with a Weber 40 DCOE), and at a light I notice RPMs are stuck at 1500 for some reason.  Normal is 900-1000.  First time this happened.  Then after driving off, goes back down to 1000 in neutral at next light.  Then, 20 minutes later stuck again.  A few revs brought it back down.  So, get home, and I'm pushing the linkage and revving by hand, and over and over, right back to 1000, and then maybe every 10th time, gets stuck at around 1500 when I let go, and when stuck just with the slightest push of my finger, it settles itself back down to 1000.

Also, the linkage itself is very greased up at all points, so that's not an issue at all I think.

Any ideas whats gumming up the works???

Cheers in advance for any advice.

A 998 with a 45! I would say that is a problem to start with. The port velocities will be a bit low. You could be having drop out issues. But I would start by checking for air leaks on your many vac lines.

I had a similar issue with mine which frustrated many attempts at a fix until, on a recommendation from Croydon Minis, I fitted a new throttle cable. Problem solved!

Ah, not a 45.  Typo.  It's a Weber 40 DCOE.  Jetted properly and runs pretty good actually.  Thanks for the advice.  I'll check vac lines.

Cheers

The old cable seemed only slightly stiffer than the new one, but it was cheap, easy to change over, and the problem which had been driving me nuts, was gone.

Got it.  Thx so much for letting me know.  I'll give it a try!  Cheers mate!

Hi

After checking with a known good cable as suggested above here are some other potential watch points for you.

What linkage/ wheel do you run - some physically rub from about 80 percent of full throttle (sort of twist) or foul on a return spring, and sometimes the linkages just don't align perfectly

The end sheath of the outer accelerator cable where it changes towards the linkage or wheel  ( should be a swivelling housing that houses the end of the sheath) . Two things here, - make sure you have a means to allow swivel and secondly check that the outer sheath is not getting caught up here - IMO the cable needs a tiny amount of slack at rest - but don't let the outer cable pop out of the swivel mount   Weber call the part i am referring to as an outer accelerator stop plane.

Lastly - check the action of the return springs - sometimes one can be moved slightly to assist

And just as a curiosity exercise - when in higher than normal idle - try to semi stall it using the clutch- does it lower the rpm and remain low - i am thinking float level or slightly rich at idle as something to consider if the normal culprits don't solve this-
