Hi,

Is there any way of retrieving the engine number from this partial?

It's a 1275 A+.

What I can make out is:

9 100593

Left to the 9 is the edge of a 0 or 9.

I'm hoping something like the serial can point to the right engine code.

Thanks

I don't recall why I remember this but I'm pretty sure there was an earlyish A+ with a 12HC09 prefix.

Not really.

but you can get close by putting the info into the Guessworks engine number decoder and see what options you have ending with the 9 and what looks like a 0 in front of it.

12H xxxxxxxxx have fun.

Not with what you've got, it'd almost definitely start 12H - but if you carefully remove the remains of the plate and give it a nitric acid bath - it just may reveal some more characters the look to be missing (possibly just very lightly stamped between the 9 and the 1) - that with luck  and a teardown of the engine (assuming it's all original) - i.e checking what pistons, cam, diff and dizzy it has fitted should mean you stand a fighting chance  when running it through guessworks engine no. decoder ...

Having said all that the engine number is not that important anyway - you can have 123456789 if you so desire.... one of my engines was acquired without it's full plate -  so I stamped a blank with my mobile & postcode - DVLA took that with no issues (it was a few years ago so things may have changed but...)

Going off http://www.guess-wor...ech/engine.htm, with 12H, all 3 digit codes are eliminated based on being A+. So the 4 left, with 0 or 9 followed by 9 is:

12H A09
Source Vehicle : Metro Economy
Engine type & CC : A+ 1275 cc Transverse mounted
Fueling :
Engine features : Lucas 16AC alternator with -ve Earth
Gearbox features : Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints

12H B09
Source Vehicle : Metro

Engine type & CC : A+ 1275 cc Transverse mounted

Fueling :

Engine features : Lucas 16AC alternator with -ve Earth 55 Amp Alternator Police Specifications Breakerless (electronic) ignition Mechanical petrol pump

Gearbox features : Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints 3.4:1 Final Drive

12H C09
Source Vehicle : Metro
Engine type & CC : A+ 1275 cc Transverse mounted
Fueling :
Engine features : Pre-engaged starter
Gearbox features : Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints

12H D09
Source Vehicle : Metro
Engine type & CC : A+ 1275 cc Transverse mounted
Fueling :
Engine features : Pre-engaged starter Wide Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints 1985 Requirements 1988 Model year Breakerless (electronic) ignition
Gearbox features : Std. Ratio Rod Change gearbox with Pot Joints 3.4:1 Final Drive

I'll have a look at the alternator and starter later tonight. I think its all original.

Is any of the remaining easily ruled out? Or is there a way of knowing the Serial range of each Engine code?

The plate doesnt have any Code Suffix inbetween the Code and Serial.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Looking further it has:

Pre-engaged starter
A127-55 alternator
65dm4 electronic distributor

Though I don't think it's going to help me crack the code.

If you are stripping right down

A09 has 3.1 final drive, the others have 3.44 you could count the teeth on the crown and pinion

Thanks for pointing that out @steeley.

I will be doing a complete strip down after I finish the body work so this will definitely help.
