Those Damn Roll Pins!

If you'd drifted the pin through the coupling to the point where it's no longer engaged in the Shaft, then you can remove the assembly from the car and finish the job on the bench. If the Pin is partly in the Shaft, that'll be enough to get it in Reverse.

 

Be sure to use a good flat Pin Punch of the right size and not one that's too small or one with a taper. Don't be tempted to try and drill it, the pins are somewhat hard, you won't drill it, only break the drill bit off making a hard job worse.

 

One of those Pin Presses are ideal, I must get around to making one !

 

I'm not in favour of bashing the Pins in and out as all that can do is distort the bore that the shaft is in in the case, that would make it an even looser fit that leads to the seal not being able to seal.

We are swapping out the standard gearstick for the kad short shifter. Looks a straightforward job but can we get those two roll pins out?!?!? The left hand one is now flush to the outside of the housing but despite an afternoon of punching and hammering it just will not budge any further. Have now left it for the day and will try again tomorrow but any ideas or tips would be appreciated!

Been a while since I took out the roll pins on a Mini

 

You can get one of them out by putting the car into reverse gear, and that allows one at least

 

Someone will no doubt know of a another method for both or just the other pin.

Thanks, I read about putting into reverse but now that one of the pins is now sticking inside and not outside the housing this won't be possible?...without somehow putting it back where we started?

There's a great tool for this. Looks like a mini 'G' clamp and pushes the pin out in 10 seconds.

do you reckon can can make a version that could be used to extract and insert the roll pins in the remote housing, the one in the gearbox selector shaft as well as the ones off he back of the diff housing

Yup pin press tool otherwise belting it with a hammer just puts damage onto the gearbox

Are you talking about the roll pins (at the gearbox end of the shift rod) or the pins in the gearstick housing that hold the bayonet cap on?

I haven't actually thought about those. I did make my own 'punch' a while back for doing those in the Shifter Housing, though, I use that one in the Press, but can be Hammered too. I made it such with a long thin 'pin' in it, that goes a long way in to the Roll Pin so when using it, it helps control the shaft from rolling, which I found happened often when trying to get the pin started for removal. Now I can drop the 'Punch' in to the Pin and that holds it where it needs to be, leaving me one hand free to simply line up the head of the Punch under the Press.

 

I can't say I've ever had issues removing that on the shift shaft in the Gearbox, they seem to come out with a Punch and not having to resort to bashing it hard at all. I can't see why a Pin Press couldn't be made all the same.

 

Likewise, that for the Diff Centre Pin, being an all steel part that can be sat flat on the bench, over a small hole, is fine for removal I think. Similar for fitting it again too, only it needs to be stood up on the Bearing mount. The worst part of removing these pins in some instances is the full diameter of the hole for the pin is never drilled right though, it's only a smaller hole and often cocked off at an angle. Usually, when I have these apart, I'll drill that hole though using an end mill cutter. As I no longer run these Diffs, it's not often I encounter them anymore.

success! an overnight soaking and a better pin punch seemed to do the trick...tap tap tap! thanks for the tips and advice.

 

It is now fully installed  :highfive:
