Hi all, I’ve managed to find an OEM 12v clock on eBay in my journey to turn my MPI Cooper back to factory spec. I’ve been searching g for a while for these, but in my effort have come up short. This one I’ve managed to source apparently doesn’t keep time very well. Has anyone had these repaired before? Thanks

If it is the round clock with hands it is likely the motor and gears are gummed up.
A sensative clean and reoil with light machine oil, 3 in 1, singer, should have it back in time.

Ah - same problem. Initially kept poor time, then packed up completely. So far I have failed to get the chrome bezel off as that is the only way in with the molded back. If anyone has tips on how to do that without damaging the Bezel, that would be useful.

Are these made by Smiths ? If so, usually they can repair them.

I’m not sure if they are made by smiths. It’s the original 12v magnolia clock that came with MPI’s and possibly SPI’s? There aren’t any marking on it like there would be with a smiths gauge

Ours has never kept any proper time.
Like Bruiser , I'm looking to get into the unit to attempt some 'maintenance'

Ok, so I have mine apart. Took a lot of gentle persuading of the binnacle ring but finally it’s off. Whatever horrible plastic they are from is crap. I’m addressing all the cracks and the broken off bulb holder with araldite at work. As for the clock mechanism itself I think if found the problem. The little circuit has four soldered pins that connect to the clock gears. The solder had dried and cracked on all four and I was able to pull it off with no force whatsoever. I’ll re solder these connections and put it back together to test it.

Brave work !

Noted it does not sound like a Smiths clock.

As a suggestion here if your repair doesn't do the trick - perhaps retro fit clock innards from another ?

I have a cheap second clock ready for the swap just in case. It’s either that or I swap the face, hands and binnacle onto the cheap one

I was also going to start a new thread for this but I’ll just post it here. What was the original orientation of the voltmeter/clock/oil temp gauges. Was it in that order? Thanks
