1998 Mpi Sluggish Turning Over, Battery Ok

Best Answer Alexxx , 20 April 2021 - 11:13 PM

one problem solved...the alternator was seized! also cracked casing underneath.

Slackened it off and the car tunrs over normally.

The clue was when it fired briefly (on easy start) I could hear the belt squeal

Trying to get my 1998 mpi project car running but it turns over so slowly.

Even with the plugs out it does not turn over quickly. Used a battery (new) out of my mx5 mk1 so it's not the battery, (spins that over fast enough) I even hooked that up to a larger battery with jump leads, still sluggish with the plugs out.

I disconnected all the starter motor connectors, cleaned them up, cleaned up the earth to bright metal, none of that made any difference.

With the plugs in, it does not turn fast enough to start, like its on its last legs battery wise.

I guess it is a duff starter motor, are there any checks I can do (resistance etc) before buying a new unit?

I had the plugs out to spin it over to get oil pressure registering before startng, even with lots of slow carnking, I can't see any change in the oil pressure gauge I checked and cleaned the (single wire) connection on the block. I noticed there is another connector going to some sensor on the block that could maybe be the oil pressure sender but that has a clipped multi pin connector on it. Am I on the right connector? (single wire)
