Hi Experts!

Trying to track down where a slight rattley / clicky noise is coming from on my 1100 engine. I was suspicious that some part of the rockers could be contacting the rocker cover, but there is no evidence of that on the inside of the cover or the rockers themselves.

I did notice that there is considerable play (about 0.8mm) along the rocker bar. (see fat chonker feeler guage inserted below.) Should I look to take this up with a larger washer? These are the minisport 1.3:1 roller rockers. The end rocker here is free to slide about sideways a little bit which can't be good. Although I haven't tried running the engine with the cover off (yet) I suspect this could be the cause of the noise. What kind of clearance should one have here?

The originals had a sprung washer that you could use.

Roller rockers can rub on standard head nuts,a reason to fit the smaller ARP ones,
And also rub on most alloy cam covers, but will clear on the standard steel ones :-)

I don't know if there are any published figures for free movement/play on these. Have you aligned all the others as well? Sometimes ( well probably often) different heads and set up need slight adjustments ( which is why I like the original springs that Nick mentioned - they can take up the slack on most posts/rockers .)  You may need to shave off from spacers or even the side of a rocker arm. What you have rightly figured is THAT movement is excessive -  IMO the feel should be a tiny bit of freedom but not enough to walk all over the pushrod - ( I won't put a figure up as i don't have a rocker setup to check against)  Cheers Darryl

Thanks for the info, all!

Yes I should really have held onto the old sprung washer but the original rocker assembly was very worn and got scrapped when the engine was rebuilt.

Tones61: indeed next time I put an engine together I think I'll go the extra mile and shell out for some ARP hardware!

Earwax: The rockers are aligned as well as they can be without getting into modifying them by shaving thickness off as you suggest. I've ordered some correctly sized washers to take up the gap, so I'll see what results I get from those.

When any rockers are fitted, unless as fitted the push rods are dead square to the rockers - and that rarely happens - then there will be some side thrust on the rockers. Probably more so with Roller Tips, it's important to keep them not only from moving but in the right place.
