hello

I have a Metro which I race. The metro engine mounts are pretty good as standard and is in most a-series metros sort of a 3 point mounting system, some of you probably know it. I have added an extra stabilizer on mine, the one from a mini that goes from above the flywheel housing back to the bulkhead, this solved a problem at a time, which was knocking the fan into the radiator when I ripped an engine mount.

the problem is now that I have fitted a longer manifold and weber carburetor and this hits the bulkhead when setting off. I also tend to separate or crack the exhaust manifold. I could fit shorter inlet stacks but like the ones I have so I thought I might add more mini engine mounts, specifically one of the ones from the lower rear of the engine and back to the subframe.

as I dont suppose any of you have experiences with extra metro engine stabilizers I wondered if you had any thoughts on the subject or at least could show me where on the engine the various stabilizer rods minispares sells goes

thanks in advance

I used the adjustable stabilizer out of an ERA mini and was able to crank the engine forward with it.

Don't go to far as you will start having jumping out of gear problems.

Forget the lower ones they don’t stop much rocking.

sounds more like you need to check the condition of your current mounts.

never used any extras on the HillClimb car.

if you really have to add another get a DSN retro sport one of the thermostat housing ones as it will be easily to make up a steady to attach to that. Ps if you phone them you should be able to just order the housing and rose joint.

no I dont think so. I check this from time to time by carefully jacking the car up under the gearbox.

that thermostat housing stabilizer, does that not make the thermostat housing leak? it looks like a solution that is going to leak

It put the load where it should be unlike the ultimate ones that did cause it to leak.

I bet your bottom end don’t move this much

but a well sorted single upper stabiliser will stop/reduce movement on a Metro. What have you actually fitted?

no mine does not move like that at all. feels very solid when you inspect it.

those engine stabilizers in the video does not do a lot of good

i have one horizontal one from above the flywheel to the bulkhead from a 70'ies mini with poly bushes in it

Keep in mind here too, the Metro Mounts do normally allow much more movement than the Mini items and are softer.

As this is a race car, would you not be better off here going to a solid mount ?

I agree with Nick that the standard Mini Lower Steadies are next to useless, however a more thoughtfully located lower steady would serve to reduce lower engine movement should you retain soft mounts.

Ive got the cheapo thermo steady on mine, so far no leaks and has made a noticeable difference to steadyness without increased nvh.

Thats with poly steadys and new engine mounts.

it sounds like you know the metro mounts and I have thought about fitting harder mounts,

but I have concluded that I would be worried about the large rear mount because this is only mounted with three 8mm bolts into aluminium and I think these threads would give in and about the two small mounts in the pulley end as the arm to the engine is very long. I would be worried that it would start to leak in the speedo housing and gearbox area where that arm mounts to if I used solid mounts in that end. but a solid mount between radiator and flywheel housing might be something to try.

I was hoping that one of the lower steadies could be moved to go from the upper half of the engine and in roughly a 45 degree angle down to the subframe behind the engine. this I feel would help me. I guess I have to fabricate this my self :)
