Year of your vehicle:- 1992
Model:- Italian Job Special 1.3 Carb (on electronic ignition, not points)

I've recently put my mini back on the road. Having a grand old time and did ~1000miles before I noticed a leak in a vacuum pipe, changed it started her up again, wonderful I thought.

After about 1 minute it cuts out, unable to start again. It'll wind over just fine, but never actually going for it. If I leave the vehicle a half hour or so it'll start up again, run for between 45s & 1.5mins and it'll cut out again, unable to start again.

Any advice would be wonderful, It's driving me potty.

Things I've tried/ checked:

Fuel
- Fresh fuel in the tank
- Fuel appears to be pumping when I pull the feed pipe off the carb
- Tried incrementally going Richer & Leaner on  mixture screw
- Blown fuel pipe through

Spark
- I appear to have a spark
- Slightly tweaked timing adv & ret
- Changed coil

Is there oil in the carb dashpot ?

Have a look - and just top it up, then try and see how you get on.

Are the plugs getting damp with fuel? Also check the oil for signs of petrol in the sump (sniff it)

Just topped it up, and doesn't seem to have done the trick

plugs don't seem damp, no. Doesn't seem to have any fuel smell in it

Is the vent hole in the fuel cap clear?

As far as I can see, I've tried starting it without the cap on also

Thanks for the ideas so far :)

I should add, for the small time it runs, it seems to rev as per normal

What happens when you take the vacuum pipe off again?

If nothing has been touched, and it was running fine before, the you only need 3 fundamental items

Fuel, Air and a spark

Air is all around, so you can probably rule that out, leaving fuel and a spark

All I can think of is something is going wrong with the fuel pump or the float bowl or you have a weird case of some kind of vapour lock in the carb? I think the Italian Jobs have a HIF carb so maybe check if there's actually a heat shield there or if the fuel pipes are near the exhaust? Not sure how it relates to a vacuum pipe but might be worth a look.

Could simply be a coincidence and theres a bit of dirt in the carb.

I'd remove the carb dashpot and check that the jet is clear, then turn it over on the starter to see if there's fuel through the carb

As has been previously stated, a blocked fuel cap breather is exactly the symptom you describe, so as soon as it stops, undo the fuel cap and see if it hisses

Then get an eye dropper and drip 3-4 drops of fuel at the Carb inlet (or a squirt of easy start). If it fires briefly, then the issue is fuel starvation.

Blocked jet/dashpot suggestions don't hold for the symptoms you describe, especially as you say it revs normally. A possible match would be a crushed/partially blocked fuel line/pipe. It equalizes after the 30 mins or so while not running - draws enough fuel to start but can't sustain the flow when running.

Typically, with fuel starvation when idling, not touching the throttle, speed will increase just before it stalls as it goes from slightly rich at idle to perfectly stoichiometric as the float bowl empties.

Hope that prompts some places to look.

P.S Don't ya just love the word 'stoichiometric'
