After chasing rattily engine noises, I have ended up doing a rear subframe replacement!

 

Background, went to fit a new pin to the passenger side radius arm (very slight play + rubber dust covers had disintegrated), despite lots of heat and extreme care with 1/4" ratchet 1 bolt sheared and another I wasn’t happy with the captive nuts thread (rusty/partially stripped - tap didn’t seem to help much either). Looked at subframe and decided it was a mess, so set about replacing.

 

New heritage frame has been fitted. All parts have been striped, cleaned, rebuilt and replaced if necessary. Everything is back together again and nearly ready to return to the road for the first time in 3 years, but have an issue with the handbrake cable. The rear subframe section of the cable is brand new, as are the handbrake quadrants and pins (original quadrants mounting holes had worn elliptical). I have checked and double checked everything, and confirmed quadrants are fitted correctly. However try as I might I cant get the handbrake cable to clear/ not rub on the passenger side. On the drivers side the cable just barely clears with approx 2mm clearance. The cable is rubbing on the passenger side where it goes through the frame on its way to the quadrant (this is also were it is tight clearance on the drivers side). Something must be wrong here? I have search the forum and this usually seems to be an issue with non genuine frames (the handbrake bracket/cable support welded on in the wrong place). Could this be the case also with my genuine frame?

 

One of my thoughts was perhaps trying to sleeve the handbrake cable were it sits in the bracket/support, just to gain a couple of mm, this should push the cable out and away from the frame?

 

Hopefully someone has come across this before and come to the rescue with a suggestion.

PS. Pictures taken with the car in the air, even with rear wheels on and car sitting on rear wheels cable still rubs.

The splitter on the subframe needs lubing and closing up before it goes back on the road.

 

are the quadrants the right way? The round end to the wheel IIRC?

 

how does the cable site with the hand brake on/off?

Will make sure I close up the handbrake support bracket tabs, and grease everything up (had lowered the car and totally forgotten about these).

 

Im 99% the quadrants are the correct way around. Before installing I checked against pictures I took before disassembly, looked in the haynes manual and referred to my 1990 Mini City which is totally original with only 25k miles from new as a point of reference. These are fitted the opposite way to as you describe above, but do correlate with posts in this thread (including a post of your own) -  https://www.theminif...t-installation/

 

I have attached a picture showing the radius arms on the bench with the quadrants visible.

 

The handbrake cable clears the subframe where it is rubbing if the handbrake is on (about 3 - 4mm clearance), with the handbrake off the cable rubs on passenger side.
