I have now my third hydraulic brake light switch, and afther a small year of working, it now only works when i do an emergency brake. So with a normal drive with some braking for the corners, no brake light comes on.

Not that save i think.

Since this is my third one, and all the onces before this just stoped working completly, what is wrong with those things?

Does someone here know more about this? Or do i install them wrong?

Have you tried adjusting it?

Some of the plastic switches are of very poor quality.

This has been covered, before, but I don't have access to those pages, at present.

These two links will get you to better quality switches.

Finally, can I ask, when you fitted the previous switch, did you just fit it, or did you fit it and adjust it until the brakelight came on as soon as the pedal moved? The reason I ask is, if the brakelight switch is set to come on only after the pedal is reaching its full travel, the switch will fail quite quickly, because it is effectively working as a pedal stop.

I can't see how you could install one incorrectly. The most likely cause I can think of is an internal seal has failed so pressure is equalising & nothing is moving. Unless you're using some exotic brake fluid it doesn't like, it's more duff manufacturing  :(

What's the year of the mini? Also have the brakes been bled.

It's type of switch that goes on top of the banjo union I think, but converting to that type could be a solution.

I think the majority of the currently available hydraulic brake light switches are unreliable. I've got one fitted to my car that's 12 months old and is still working at the moment, think it came from mini-mine.
I seem to remember from an old thread that someone- might have been Spider, suggest that the Hella branded switches were more reliable.
Other than that it's keep an eye out for NOS or convert to a pedal mounted switch.

That the later non hydraulic type. I think that setup is a bet better, but it does not fit on my car at the moment.

This is for my Midas, the brakes have been bleed indeed. Can air be trapped in the switch?

The current hydraulic switches aren't much good at the best of times, but Silicon Fluid kills them off quick smart.

Hella have a good quality Switch, but being Hella, not cheap. Hella P/N 4565.

Arg why? Even the orgainsation that commissioned it is trying to get off it. One of my pet peeves that and waterless coolant.
