Ragging my mini up Prescott Hill yesterday I realised my KYB gas adjust as good as they are for everyday driving, are not the greatest shocks in the world for fast cornering.

What would you advise as being a track day shock capable of coping with quick bumpy roads too - is there an all rounder?

I run my mini slightly lowered with hi-los but not massively, probably only 25mm lower than standard ride height.

Having tried nearly all the options over the years (including gaz, koni, kyb agx, protech and avo among others) I have finally settled on Avo for both road and track use, they can be wound down for comfort on the road and really stiffened up for the track, quality seems better than the others as well - although the Kyb Agx were excellent quality they didn't have enough range of adjustment to work as I would like on road and track. Again koni are good quality but won't give you the correct range of adjustment for the track. Gaz are ok but don't seem to last too long (reflected in the price I suppose) and I didn't have much success with protech - they look nice and shiny but quality issues mean they rattle on slightly rough surfaces, not sure why everyone raves about them!

I am not much of a driver and have never been on a track but what makes them unsuitable for fast cornering?I have protech coilovers on the rear of my MGB and they are superior to the Gaz and Koni I tried.Steve..

Protech are the best and always will be, purely because they have better customer service and can do custom valving if needed

Err so do AVO.  But AVO will not do the poor designed coil over kit with everything offset to squeeze into the back of a Mini.

Just a bit too soft to stop body roll. Fine for road speed but once you’re sliding a bit they feel sloppy.

I thought springs altered body roll and the dampers stopped this becoming out of control?live and learn eh?,Steve..

Yes,the spring absorbs the road/ bump shocks,
Dampers dampen the oscillations from the springing actions
