Just rebuilt my A series gearbox and I made a failed attempt to fit the needle roller bearing into the clutch housing.

The cover had some heat left in it from fitting the 1st motion shaft outer race (as per the Mini Spares instructions) and I was using a socket to help drive the bearing in.

It got halfway before I could see the bearing case start to deform, so i stopped.

Should I have left more heat in the cover? I was worried the needle bearing might have plastic parts which would melt, and Haynes only talks about boiling water being used.

So can someone tell me the correct steps, and probably correct tool, that is required to fit bearing in the cover?

And when I am fitting the bearing into the gearbox case, what is this "suitable drift" Haynes talks about?

I'm keen to get the job done and not ruin any more bearings.

Cheers

I freezed the bearing and heated the housing in the oven. Bearing fell in.

While this refers to the Outrigger Bearing (First Motion Shaft Bearing), there is the same instructions regarding the Idler Gear Bearings.

This is Leyland's advice regarding the use of heat on the Transfer (Flywheel) Housing;-

I do as Tones61 suggested - press them in.
