Hi all,
Was working on front suspension and if I grab the disc (no wheel attached) I can move the upper arm backwards and frontwards on its shaft (quite a lot) I also think this the big knock I hear when engaging clutch (which would be logical).
How much play is ok or should there be none?
To inspect the arm fully I will need to remove the arm and this is proving a problem as the top ball joint will not separate at the moment.
What checks should I do when removed?

Thanks Jason

If the movement you feel is along the shaft axis then something is missing as there should be no play.

if the play is across the shaft then the needle roller bearings or shaft are worn. Again no play should be noticeable.

Ideally you'd want around 0.002 to 0.005" end float, but some new shafts (as the Thrusts fit up against the shoulders of the Shaft) have up to 0.020".

If the Shaft hasn't been replaced in recent times, then usually it's because the Thrust Faces on the Arm are worn. There's a small chance it could be the Thrust Washers, but they are on the hard side and I'm yet to see one wear.

The movement is along the shaft but I did not see if the shaft is moving or the arm is moving on the shaft. I will have a closer look tomorrow.
Thanks for the info👍
