Having been through 4 or 5 ‘Lucas’ push button starter solenoids, I decided to buy a Durite one in August last year. It has now failed just like the others.

All of a sudden after a drive, either immediately after or the next day, the car won’t start. Not even a click. Even the pushbutton does nothing. Of course shorting across the terminals with a screwdriver gets the car started. Replacing the solenoid always fixes the issue for a while.

Does anyone have any thoughts?

Sounds like the quality is no longer there.  All it is is a very heavy duty relay.

I still have a 20-30 original solenoid on my car.

Interesting that the Durite one failed too. I went through about 4 of the Lucas ones before trying the Durite one and the difference in quality was immediately noticeable. I kept that same solenoid on my car until I eventually swapped to a 1275 with a pre-engaged starter.

I took the Durite one off this morning. It has a heavy rattle when you shake it. Not good.

Long shot but is there sufficient current to pull it in and hold it when starting leading to overheating?Or is it indeed Tat?Steve..

It really is just about the quality of the internals - they burn out.

Try a Britpart 13H5952 starter.

One - they are fitted to Land Rovers and two - they carry a 2 year warranty. I can vouch for them,

I had the same issue as you, then fitted one to our Midget from Britpart.

No bother since

Free replacement Durite installed. Let’s see if it can best the record for lasting more than 20 starts.
