Dizzy Dwell Vs Point Gap

Best Answer croc7 , 09 June 2021 - 11:27 PM

Condenser or earthing issue???

Earthing issue, I guess.  I had installed the leads of the dwell meter incorrectly.  Re-checked the dwell and its right on the money.  Thanks.

Installed an Aldon Yellow dizzy, point gap to .013” per spec, yet only 40 degrees dwell (per 2 dwell meters.). Instructions state should be 51 degrees. Which is more significant? Point gap or dwell? After adjusting dwell to 51, point gap was huge, nearly.030”. Doesn’t make sense.

Edit:  Turns out there was a dwell meter operator error.  I had connected the dwell meter leads per the instructions in the Haynes manual (one to the pos on the coil, the other to neg on the coil) but a Youtube video on dwell angle measurement showed attaching the ground lead of the meter to a good ground, the other to the neg terminal on the coil.  Dwell was right on the money.  DOH!

The gap is calculated from the dwell angle because it is more simple to adjust gap than dwell as not everybody has a dwell-meter. I should go for a correct dwell setting.

Agree, I would only bother with gap measurement for the initial setup and fine tune dwell. Perhaps your points are not new/corroded somewhat?

The dwell is a measure of how long the coil is charging roughly, too much and it can overheat, not enough and possible weak spark, sorry if you knew this,Steve..

Appears strange that your measured points gap is 0.030in for a correct dwell angle measurement. Never known a points gap to almost double. Are you sure you are using an imperial set of feeler gauges, not metric, because it is a strange coincidence that a correct gap of 0.015in is 0,35mm.

Yep. using the correct set of gauges.  What has me puzzled is what I have is opposite from the Haynes manual, which says that if the dwell angle is too small the point gap is too wide.  I'm already at .013", can't go much lower.  Guess I'll do as suggested and use the point gap as an approximate, then fine tune to the correct dwell angle.  Perhaps manufacturing tolerances would account for the gap question.  What I should be looking for is the correct dwell angle to assure proper charging of the coil, right??
