Straight Cut Gears

I want to put a straight cut gear set in when I do a rebuild because as a kid I always loved the sound of it but couldn't afford it. What is the difference in just using straight cut drop gears and a whole straight cut set? Do they both achieve the whining noise?

It’s addictive.

The sound of the aside, just be aware with a S/C Gearbox Set, they will change your gear ratios a fair bit. 4th will be the same as it is now (assuming you retain the Final Drive you have now), but 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be taller and closer together in their ratios.

If it's a road car and you enjoy driving it, don't do it. Just my opinion as others love them.
I've just removed mine as the noise became wearing very quickly.

The gear sets will change the overall gear ratios as Spider has said, and normally are a bit quieter in 4th gear as Midas as said, so are a bit more liveable if that’s a concern

The biggest issue with the SC CR gear set is the higher 1st gear. It means that unless you fit a very low final drive ratio the initial acceleration will be poor and you will have to slip the clutch a lot to pull away with decent acceleration. Thus, the clutch plate will need changing more often. Ideal final drive ratio with SC CR gears is a 3.9 in a 1275 with a long-endurance cam.
The gear noise with just the SC CR gear set is not too bad, although it is noisier than a helical 'box. However, the SC drop gears are horrible on a journey. I had them in my full-spec rally 'S', but took them out as the noise was simply intrusive. In fact, you will need ear plugs on any sort of journey. Of course, the SC drops are intended for competition use and so crash helmets will be worn.
