..as above; if using loctite instead of lock tabs, should washers be used?

If you look under the head of genuine bolts, you'll see that the part of the bolt that would make contact when tightened is round in shape, with the Hex of the Head a few thou back, this and with the hardness of the Crown Wheel I don't use Washers as they would only tend to crush under the torque of the Bolt, resulting in a joint that's not as tight as it should be, I also gave up long ago on locktabs for the same reason. I just clean the bolts and threads in the centre and use Loctite 243.

..one more thing:  what is the correct torque for these bolt ?

i have found references that indicate 60lbft, but i'm sure 45lbft was posted in a recent quaife diff thread.  annoyingly i can't find that post anymore....

Hi KTS,

Yeah I found in a post to me where Spider says to torque to 45lbs.  It was under diff bearing preloading.  I am hopeless at quoting so could only copy and paste some text.  Hopefully Spider is fine with me copying and pasting his info?

Brad,

I'm not sure what manual you are working from, but it is in most. 45 ft / lb. I don't use the locktabs but Loctite 243 on these bolts, just be sure thy are very clean if you use any thread locking compound. I use Universal Paint Thinners for cleaning. Bunnings have it and it's not dear. You'll find a small tin handy for loads of stuff.

Haynes quote 60 ft/lb. I used that figure on mine with locktabs & pulled a thread. In the end I went with 50 ft/lb with loctite.

To clarify the Torque needed here, the early bolts were a different spec and those were torqued - in to a standard diff - to 60 ft/lb. There was a change in bolt spec, I think it was around 74 or 76 and these are Torqued to 48 ft/lb.

When fitting the bolts in to a Quaife, they are only Torqued to 45 ft / lb regardless of which bolts are used.

I should have both bolt types, I'll get up some photos to help ID which is which.
