Hi Everyone,

This is how I fixed a broken stud on two upper dash rails.

First I carefully ground away the two spot welds, using my mini grinder (also know as a Dremel)

Before peeling of the bracket, I traced the outlines to make sure that it would return to the exact same spot.

Next, I cleaned and straightened the bracket and ground off the remains of the old stud

Before welding on a new one

And finally I welded the bracket with the new stud back to the dash rail

Making sure that it would be placed exactly were it has been and minimising the heat intake the best I could. For welding I used a slightly higher setting on my welder so that a very short burst would result in a strong weld. During welding, I peeled back the plastic surface of course.

Hope that this might encourage someone to repair his upper dash rail..

Cheers from the Pied Piper's Town

Nice job. That's the sort of job that most modern car owners would either, A) Put up with the rattle, or B) Take it into a local repairer and get a bill for two hours labour.

Fortunately, us Mini owners are made of sterner stuff!

I never even thought about repairing my rusty, broken stud in this way. I'm going to try this even though I have a nice new leather dashpad waiting to go in!

Repairing things is an important part of my life philosophy and so I might not always be successful but I will always try.
