Hi. I have a 1980 1275 GT but I have noticed that the wrong distributor has been fitted.

I have purchased the correct 45D one from Powerspark however the existing dizzy is fixed with a “C clamp” with one securing bolt.

It is an A engine and I didn’t think they used C clamps but used a twin bolt clamp with a pinch bolt.

Has anyone else experienced an A engine with a C clamp?

Being a 1980 model, originally, it would have come with an A+ Block, however, it would seem that yours has been swapped for an earlier block.

By the sounds of it, this is the clamp you are looking for;-

Hi Spider, from what I can find out, the block would have been an A block for an April 1980 mini although at that time they just used whatever they had about.

I’ll take a picture or two tomorrow although I am having my suspicions that I have an A+ block as the distributor on it at the moment is a 65D which I think is a different size shaft to the 45D. The electrical box fixed to the 65D distributor is blocked by the starter motor from turning any further so I can’t set the timing to 13 degrees, as I thought it should be.

is there an easy way to tell if it’s an A+ block?

The clamp on the 65D at the moment is part 613857A via MiniSpares and described as

DISTRIBUTOR RETAINING CLAMP,A PLUS pre 85.

Index the distributor drive spindle round one tooth and then you should be able to set the timing as required.

An A+ block has strengthening ribs, the distributor clamp you describe and the alternator mount moved towards the water pump with a small bracket rather than one around 4” long

Hi GraemeC.

Sorry, not done this before so can you explain what you mean by indexing the drive spindle round one tooth, and how do you do this?

Remove the dizzy then screw one of the long bottom radiator mounting bolts into the distributor drive spindle that is left in the block.

This will allow you to pull the spindle out - it will turn as you do so as it is driven by skew gears.

Then turn it slightly so when you reinsert it it engages one tooth round.

If you want to be able to turn the dizzy further clockwise then turn the drive slightly anti-clockwise.

Re-fit dizzy and re-time
