Ok I have finally fitted my new bigger bore motor in my Moke.  Now I have a couple of little problems with the old 998 brackets which don't quite fit.

The first is the top radiator bracket which I expected since I had to get a custom one made for my 998 when I changed from rear facing radiator to front facing radiator.  I bought the standard 1275 bracket but it's bit short, the holes seem to line up though.  Should I have bought the GT bracket which is a bit longer?  Here is a link:

Also the top radiator side stabiliser support doesn't reach my new 1275 head.  Would this bracket fix the problem?

One other issue is the bottom radiator hose which seems a little short now because it has to reach around the A+ timing cover breather outlet.  Is their a different hose available which has a longer bottom pipe to reach around the timing cover breather?

Thanks Brad

Hey Brad,

The GT Top Radiator Steady Bracket maybe the one you need here. Just before we go too far on that, when you say the Bracket you've bought (std 1275) is short, what's fouling there ?  The 1275 Mokes did have their own unique Top Steady, however, the hole pattern is the same as one of these brackets.

As for the Bracket to go under the Thermostat Housing, yes, that's the one you'll need. Your Moke should have the Bracket on the Body with 2 sets of holes for the steady bar. When this is fitted up, the steady bar should line up with the rear set of holes.

There is only the one type of Lower Hose (as far as shape goes). Some do end up resting - just - on the Timing Chain Cover. You can usually fit the hose on the radiator and angle it so it does give some clearance here, but that too depends on what radiator you are running with.

Thanks Chris,

I'll take some photos tomorrow of the rad bracket and show how it is a bit short.  I'm going to join up a bit of plate to the shorter standard bracket to tide me over.  I am determined to get my Moke back on the road tomorrow.

The top steady bracket which fits on the flywheel side fits so  I will just run with one stabiliser till I order the correct top 1275 stabiliser bracket which goes on the radiator side.

My bottom radiator hose which is one of those blue silicon type seems too short because of that big breather outlet on the A+ plus timing chain.

Thanks Brad.

Was your 998 engine one that had the air injection emission system fitted ?. If so it would have had the double pulley on the water pump and the top and bottom radiator brackets being sized to suit. A standard top bracket will be too short causing the fan blade to foul the radiator core if the bottom bracket is the original 998. When converting to a forward exit top hose do not use the alloy spacer, gasket the head, fit the steady bracket, another gasket, the forward facing thermostat housing  and then a custom made top radiator bracket to suit holding the radiator vertical giving the fan blades the clearance required. Be careful to get the correct length of housing studs to suit this conversion.

As regards the hoses, top and bottom, go for the standard rubber 1275 parts, I find the silicon hoses quite unforgiving  and lead to annoying drips if there is any compromise on the fit.

Thanks Weef,

My Moke never had the air pump but was a very late model which does have the double pulley and the bottom radiator bracket to suit.  So I reckon the GT top bracket will fit.

You can see how the standard 1275/cooper S bracket is too short.

I think the GT bracket might fit correctly.  I will let you know.  If not I'll just have to fabricate something up again.

Like Weef said it looks like it will fit better without the spacer to give the correct height because of the taller 1275 block over the 998 block.

I hve one of tbose shiny rad brackets in my spares box, it did not fit my 1275 either.
I cut, shut and welded the old one to suit as I did not want to buy another which may not fit.
I suppose there is an obvious answer but I have never found an off the shelf item which fits regardless of engine or brackets.

Hi Dave, aka neighbour.  Fancy meeting you in this cold miserable part of the world,  but these Pommy's do know their Mini's ;-)

I just bought the longer Clubman rad bracket, it might fit but I doubt it.  I am starting to get a good collection of top radiator brackets ever since I changed my radiator from rear facing to front facing.

Anyway last time I just bought a piece of flat aluminum and made my own which is heaps stronger and rust resistance.

Cheers Brad.

A picture I took in a Mini place

was not interested in the small bore heads so that’s why it is cropped.

Quite a handy drawing there Nick.

If I remember, I'll dig out the original top Steady Bracket and throw up a photo of that, though they really only fit with the 'rear' facing Thermostat Covers.

Hi,

Well I lucked out on the GT rad bracket.  I just had to open up the holes a little and now everything fits great including the new 1275 top radiator side engine mount.  I just had to use the rear holes on the firewall bracket.

Oh yeah a big celebration today.  I fired up my new 1293 engine and it sounds fantastic.

My only problem is I can't disengage the clutch to select gears.

I have a new master and slave which I never got a chance to fit.  Hopefully this will fix my problem?  Also I noticed when I put the new throw out bearing on the plunger shaft it practically rattled around so the shaft was very warn down.

Does the throw out bearing need to have a tight fit on the plunger shaft to make the clutch work?

Thanks Brad

The old style ones were a loose fit.  It is only the newer ones that are a press fit.

Thanks Nick,

That is exactly how my release bearing slops around on the plunger shaft.  So that would not be my issue.  Maybe the wet mud in the old tin can of the master cylinder and bleed issues?

If I remember, I'll dig out the original top Steady Bracket and throw up a photo of that, though they really only fit with the 'rear' facing Thermostat Covers.

This is the original 1275 Top Radiator Steady Bracket. Note the 2 sets of holes

6EIr2u3.jpg

The 2 sets were to accommodate 3 and 4 tube (core) Radiators.

Small bore type

S55RYv6.jpg

The difference

TM6ciq2.jpg

Made from the same stamping, only the holes were in different locations

These were used with particular Thermostat Covers, this is the Rear Facing 1275 type

LPi6yHy.jpg

u78fk2E.jpg

It has a flatter profile with pillars to allow for the fastening of these brackets over the top of the coverss

They went to this arrangement so the Air Pump to meet Pollution Requirements had somewhere to be fitted. There was a bracket bolted to the front face of this Cover

meoLQ9Q.jpg

The Air Pump was driven off the dual pulley that was mentioned elsewhere in this thread.

The Small Bore Cover was similar, but the bolt pattern was different to suit those heads. Sorry, I don't seem to have one (thought I did,,,)

I also mentioned Fan Spacers, not sure if you guys in the UK ever got these ?

and of course old favorite

I forgot this one !

'Standard' (non GT) 1275 Bracket laid over the Moke 1275 Bracket

I don't have a GT Bracket to hand, however, it would appear that would line up with the 2nd set of holes.
