My wife needs to use the mini to get to work for a couple of months and it will be left in a public car park all day

I rather this wasn’t the case but needs must as my daughter needs the other car and I can’t get her insured in the mini

I have a decent steering lock

I am looking to fit a kill switch today

But I’m also thinking of getting a basic tracker which works with an iPhone, I have found one that I’m keen on but it won’t work with my three network as it is 2G

Anyone have one of these type fitted and are they worth fitting, I would rather pay a one of cost and not a subscription

I have one of these recommended by others. The web site is a bit of a mess but the product and particularly the after sales service is very good (up to the point the car has not been stolen...)

It has been discussed at length before, but trackers are a waste of time, unless you know a bunch of burley guys to go and reclaim your car if stolen, as the Police won’t be going after it by most recent accounts, they will say make an insurance claim.

Visual deterrent like steering locks are best and a kill switch is a great idea.

I bought a cheap TK102 from eBay, for £16, just to try it out and got a free SIM from Asda Mobile and a hard wire kit for £2.99.

Pay as you go, each call from the tracker to you cost 15p, (If I remember correctly).

Works well. Just call the tracker number and it rings you back with a link to Google maps to show where the car is.

Made in China so lots of them on eBay. Many companies rebadge them and charge lots of money for the same thing.

Doesn't seem to, but I only call it once every two weeks just to make sure its still working, and it does have a battery backup.

Why not teach the wife how to remove the coil-distributor wire and carry it with her?  If the car won't start, chances are that it won't be stolen.

Funny just watched a youtube video with some guy driving a car with no steering wheel   admittedly I think it had power steering 

 

I was thinking of making a locking cap that fits over the steering boss once the wheel is removed that is free to rotate so can't simply turn the car ...

The problem with removing a steering wheel, rotor arm etc is if it's loaded onto a low loader no-one will batter an eyelid and your security methods won't work. But they work. A visible deterrant isn't a bad idea tho

A tracker would give you a location if it was stolen

I have a Streetwise tracker, was about £45 quid. Gifgaf sim card and cost 10p per message. 

it also allows you to geofence the car. yes it drains the battery but has its own battery back up.

Last time mine went flat was after 3 months ish.

as above you can call it or txt it to get live data.

Excuse my ignorance but what is a "geofence" ?

 

And what does it do ?
