Hi Guys,

Could you recommend a break conversion kit?

I've got a 62 Morris Mini. She's a fun weekend car; she'll never be in a race.  And I'd like to upgrade from drum brakes to disk brakes.

I'm also going to turn her electric in a year or so, so I need the extra stopping power with the future battery packs.

Thanks,

Ryan

Cooper "S" drum to disc conversion kits are available from Mini specialists.

You basically need everything from the ball joints & driveshafts outwards. It'll widen the track a bit: the rear drums have built in spacers when discs are fitted.

8.4" discs were fitted to all Minis from the mid 80's - along with 12 inch wheels. There are some common components.

It's a lot of metal so shipping costs will be a factor, but checkout our TMF+ membership for a discount.

I like safe, so go for an 8.4" kit and consider a servo.

Do some research on the best pads for your driving-I always buy EBC.

Don't forget your rears, too. Keep them nipped up so they help stop you, too.

You may need to think about tyres, too. I guess the tarmac in Cali can become quite smooth in the heat?

Good luck

He'll need bigger wheels if goes 8.4".

7.5" discs are good, they were servo'd as standard, but it's not essential. There is a potential hazard in them taking all the fluid from the reservoir as the pads wear down though. Various solutions, the simplest being to check the fluid level more often.

You should go the 7.5 inch disc conversion, that would be a nice touch for your 62 Morris Mini

I'd use Mintex 1144 pads as a good all rounder for road use. With a 7.5 inch Cooper S disc kit

If you're going electric, go for 8.4".

I definitely don't want to change the wheels or widen the stance, so it sounds like a 7.5 inch kit's in my future.

I don't understand calling this "7 to 7.5" https://www.minimani...-To-Cooper-S-75

...but would this work?

Thanks!

If you are on drums at the moment, you will need swivel hubs aswell, look for a drum to disc conversion that will contain all the parts you will need.

7" were fitted to the non S Coopers with 997 & 998cc engines. They're a rarity and not as much of an upgrade.

Going to disk brakes (any sizes) will widen the track at the front unless you change the wheels to ones with an 'S' offset.

7" brakes are not particularly good and many people that have old Coopers (ie not Cooper S) change them to the better 7.5"

I'm still running single leading shoe drums on my '63 mk1. Braking is 'gradual' plenty of planning ahead required. Having said that it's generally pottering about at not much more than 50 mph. It's still got all its original features, narrow tail crank, coil spring clutch, dynamo, positive earth etc, I don't want to start modifying it although better brakes would be an asset.

If you are going to convert a '62 Mini into electric, go for the 8.4" discs and wheels. Also consider fitting airbags and a park assistant system.
