I have a 96 Japanese Rover Mini, automatic transmission.

Under normal acceleration, shifting between gears is very quick (low rpm ranges) and I get into 4th gear at 40km/h. Shifts from 3rd to 4th is almost immediate after the shift from 2nd to 3rd. Shifts are relatively smooth, but definitely not great, or where I would like them to be.

I just performed an oil change with 10w/40 MA2 spec oil. Car has 98000 KM on it.

How can I get more RPMs in each gear, and smoothen out the shifts?

Check your oil, should be 10/40 ma2 semi synthetic

Its designed for motorbikes with wet clutches, ideal for our ap mini gearboxes.

Post states that's the oil used.

The OP stated 10/40 MA2 but not whether mineral, semi synthetic or synthetic.  I'm not sure what you would run in a mini automatic as its been years since I had one and oil technology has advanced so much.

Ah, I thought MA2 oil was only available as a single type (semi synthetic).

I believe semi synthetic is what should be used, I may be wrong yet again though! What I will say though is avoid Halfords (overpriced) and also Euro Car Parts with the Triple Qx stuff (better quality out there).

Apologies and regards (I should really read posts!)

Iirc you can adjust the bands on an auto mini. Which is what I would call the governor on my American transmissions.

You can adjust the kick down control lever to make it hold the revs more and also kick down sooner for better acceleration.   Mine used to be into 4th by 25 mph, but now holds onto 3rd until around 35mph (or more if I have my foot down), but if driving gently will goto into 4th sooner so its working really well.

Where the kickdown rod attaches to the throttle body you will see it has a thread and some small nuts.  You can adjust this to effectively make the rod shorter or longer, it won't adjust massively, but by making small adjustments and trial and error you should be able to tweak it to be closer to what you want.
