My mini is currently in epoxy primer and I'm just at the point of putting the seam covers back on and final seam sealing.

I've applied BiltHamber brush-able seam sealer to all of the hidden seams and have applied Tiger seal to all of the visible external seams, in the engine bay, underneath, wheel arches, around the roof gutter, and boot.

My next job is to replace the seam covers and put some sealant at the top of them.

My question is, should the following internal only seams also be seam sealed as they are not external?

  1. Rear bench seat and arches to rear bulk head
  2. Around the bottom of the rear bins and inner sill

I don't recall having to clean any sealant off of these areas before welding, so I'm working on the basis that internal only seams don't require seam sealing as they aren't exposed to water.

Ref the companion bins no sealant there, the rear bulkhead to seat pan, personally i seam seal these but otherwise no.

The seam covers, make sure you topcoat inside them first, then add a splash of something like waxoyl but leave a small area clear at the top for the dab of sealant (i take it you will be using clips to hold the strips on??)

Yes, I'll be using clips to hold the strips on.

I was intending to try to feed something in like ACF50 after the car has been painted, as I thought it may leach out and affect the paint?

I'm also painting the car in base and clear, though have some 2k paint I can use. Will the epoxy not be sufficient?

Hey sonikk - good advice.  When you say top of the covers, fo you mean the top (nearest the roof?) or top of the cover i.e. the top of the "U" shape, all the way down the cover?

Doing similar myself so want to get it right!  Ta

Right at the top as this it’s where it’s normally sealed.

Nope is the answer. Don’t get me wrong 2K Epoxy is very good but it’s just one layer of protection. Top coat will add another layer to the areas not in contact with the clips.

I think ACF50 will be fine, normal coatings like Dinitrol etc does not react with painted surfaces unless the paint has been poorly applied or has not flashed off.
