Hi All

I'm in the process of putting my mini back together and have run into some issues.

At the moment I have everything connected up as it was when I took it apart but currently have front and rear lights working but nothing else

No Brake Light

No indicators (and hazards)

I have read that the relay might need replacing. There appears to be one under the dash as well as one in the engine bay. Which one controls indicators?

thanks in advance.

Not sure which mini you have, but the wiring diagrams are always a good place to start.
This topic covers all years/models.

The one under the dash is indicators, also make sure the Hazard flasher is in good order (maybe best to replace both)

Check the purple/orange inline fuse at the carb too

If the car has a reverse light as standard check the top fuse (4 fuse block)

Sorry should have mentioned it is 1989 mini mayfair.

Will have a look at the wiring diagrams and be back with lots of questions no doubt.

Will order new hazards switch and relay now as a starting point.

Before ordering parts I personally would perform a few simple tests. The switch just connects various wires together, look at the diagram to replicate this.A bulb with some wires and crocodile clips is a useful tester. With the quality of some modern spares the new ones could be as faulty.Have fun and be careful,Steve..

Hazards switch is pretty simple - there's a pair of terminals & group of 4 terminals the switch bridges the pair when off & feeds the indicators. When it's on the group of 4 are all  bridged to each other and the pair are isolated.

I'd also buy a power probe to help find faults much quicker

The hazards usually play up on my cars when the inline fuse on the bulkhead is feeling awkward.Do a wiggle test when you find it.

Check the brake pedal switch. I doubt it's an earth problem as you would usually find the side lights coming on

Good luck-they should be easy fixes.

There is a youtube video of how to open up and repair the dash toggle switches, including main lamps and hazards. Pretty straight forward and it nice to make originals working again. Dash relay is indicators, firewall is hazards on my '88. Also note indicators only work with ignition on (as was recently discovered on another indicator malfunction thread).

Quick update.

I cleaned up the in-line fuse in the bulk head and now have hazards but the indicators still aren’t working.
They did work for a moment so not sure what is going on there. Might wire in a new inline blade fuse.

Still not brake lights. Will try bridge the switch tomorrow.

Also no reverse light.

Any ideas would be welcome.

Ive had strange faults at the fuse block. Don't just check the fuses and their connection clips, gotta pull off the wire spade connectors, give them a good wire bristle brushing and even dip them in a white vinegar solution to convert and corrosion back to clean metal. Those spades are highly susceptible to corrosion.

I agree and also twist the ends of the fuses to check them, if they twist I bin them. Also look at the back of the fuse box for corrosion
