Drums To 8.4" Back To 7.5"

This could be the late night finish at work talking, but I've been thinking about my brakes.
I'm a really long way off worrying about it though!
Mine's a '78 clubman estate with drum brakes all round.
Now I'd like to keep with 10 inch wheels, but I'd also like to upgrade the brakes as I will be ferrying around a 4 year old and a baby when it's done (if they're still kids by then!)
Instead of paying silly money for the drum to 7.5inch conversion kit, could I fit the shafts and set up from a later 8.4" set up, and then buy the much cheaper conversion kit for that?
I 'think' I still have a spare shaft and hub set from a neon I once owned, and thought this may save a lot of cost.
Cheers all

The downside is that many of the consumables are missing and they’d need to be inspected/rebuilt before you do the swap:
CV joints
Wheel bearings
Ball joints

The shafts are the same fitting whatever brakes you have.
you are overthinking and will spend more money than needed.
disc kits
new disc uprights/hubs are now the same, CV joints are the same. Bearings are the same and disc hoses are the same.

Also make sure master cylinders are in tip top condition. If in any doubt get a seal kit, piece of mind is everything..
All adds to the SAFETY kind of world we all live in these days..

So the only difference is the disc itself and caliper mounts?
How about between the drum set up and the 8.4 inch disc?

I would also suggest to make sure that the rear cylinders are properly adjusted and that the fluid is all changed at the same time.

Yep, all this is on the list. The car is still in pieces and the previous owner had it all boxed up for over 10 years, so anything perishable will be replaced

Discs, calipers, drive flanges... plus pads, disc bolts/screws. for 8.4 to 7.5
Drums & discs - use the same ball joints, steering arms and, though they're thinner, drum driveshafts fit in disc CV joints. Everything else is different, though you could get away with using drum hoses.

Nope. Disc, drive flange. Caliper.
difference between drum and 7.5 and 8.4 is everything other than the actual drive shaft.

So I can fit the the hub, and cv from the 8.4 brakes and buy the conversion kit for 8.4 to 7.5 for the drive flange, caliper and mounts
