Hello

1993 L reg SPI Cooper, manual, RHD

I've been doing all sorts of things on my mini

Replacing carpets, taking the fuel tank out / putting it back in (rear suspension related) etc etc

The fuel gauge used to work

Now it doesn't

I thought it might be the sender unit, so I bought a new one

Without fitting it into the tank, I connected it to the wires / spade connectors that currently fit on the sender in the tank

Still nothing at the dash board fuel gauge

I'm assuming that with tank in / out and with carpet . underlay fitting / trimming, I've knicked / damaged a wire / cable

I am not an auto electrician

I'm sure you realised that

With the carpet already up / out (again), I was wondering if it might just be easier to run new wires from the tank (new sender....I have it so might as well use it) through to the front of car / dash / fuel gauge

Getting to the point....

At the front / dash / fuel gauge end, what's involved?

Can I get to the back of the fuel gauge with it all in place or do I need to remove it?

Do the wires / cables go anywhere else / connect into the loom in any particular location?

Any tips?

Thanks

Elwyn

I am not familiar with your car but if you have damaged these wires how can you be sure you have not damaged the insulation on the others?I would locate the fault personally.Steve..

Everything else is working (which doesn't mean the insulation remains intact, I know) and where the tank is moved in and out, I don't think there are any other wires / cables

But you're quite right....I will check

I am 99% sure it's damage related to the tank removal / refitting and not due to the carpet fitting

The tank is a ruddy pain and involves some encouragement in awkward positions whereas the carpet is easy, accessible, visible etc

One wire should have 10v ish from the gauge and the other is earthed somewhere. If you can use a meter you can reduce your search to one wire instead of two,Steve..

With the ignition on, touch the two wires together - does the gauge go full scale?

If it does there isn't a wiring problem.

If it doesn't, try earthing the green/black wire - does the gauge go full scale?

If it does then you have a problem on the earth wire.

If there is still no movement on the gauge you either have a wiring problem (could be either side of the gauge) or the gauge is faulty.  Multimeter/power probe time.
