Well after having recently spent just over £92 on the powerspark electronic conversion kit, new coil, cap, ht leads and spark plugs, and another £22 on an intermotor coil thinking the new Lucas branded one was duff (it must have cooled down in-between swapping the coils over on the drive the other day) I’ve finally sorted/found the issue with the misfiring under any load while driving.

As I attended a local car meet yesterday evening. Upon setting off there was a very slight misfire (you wouldn’t really notice it) during normal cursing, and a lack of performance that I can only describe as trying to drive with the handbrake half on, but not. That then changed to misfiring under any load once fully warmed up along with a rough idle and wanting to cut out. I just about made it to the show and upon popping the bonnet the coil was stone cold.

Luckily I’d thought ahead and packed just about all the ignition/dizzy related bits in the boot, so whipped the front grill off and set about swapping out the electronic ignition and baseplate swapping back to the other base plate with the points already fitted.  With a slight tweak of the timing (I had marks for both) I had it running again.

The drive back it was so much nicer, improved performance (was actually willing to rev past 3k) no more misfiring, It even started up easier than it had been earlier today when I want to move it briefly.

So the one part that was supposed to ‘improve’ staring, performance and reliably, does work, it will start and run, just with reduced performance (losing performance when you only had a maximum of 40bhp when new isn’t ideal) and like crap once warm.

That wouldn’t explain (I’ve been using super unleaded for the past year since the introduction of e10) how driving there on the electronic ignition I was getting reduced performance, holding back and a misfire on all cylinders. But on the drive back a few hours later with the points refitted (rest of the ignition as was) on the same fuel it was much more willing to rev (before it would really struggle at anything over 3k but was revving well to 5k) sounded different (before it sounded like the exhaust was blocked/muted) and no more misfiring.

Nothing wrong with good points and condenser, sure you may have to adjust it yearly alongside replacing the subframe and wheel bearings and second gear synchromesh etc.I had a hesitation/ misfire on my accuspark equipped triumph TR7.Changing to points cured it,new is not always good,Steve..

I changed the spring in my carb which did give a tiny improvement, changed my not very old plugs for new and made no difference. The day before London to Brighton the mini wouldn’t start, I had power to the coil, power to the king lead, but no spark. I changed out the new 59D electronic dizzy and put in my old points one and it ran beautifully. We did London to Brighton without any problems at all….. until today I think my head gasket has gone :(
