Hi All!

I have a 1991 Carb Mainstream Cooper and the engine builder has asked me to get the Mini Spares Lightened Verto Flywheel C-AEG422 and the Clutch kit to go with it.

I was asked to get clutch kit GCK151MS to go with the above flywheel, but when I looked at the MS website, it suggested GCK152MS, as this is a larger Clutch for 1990 onwards cars.

Will the GCK152MS Clutch kit fit OK with the lighter Flywheel C-AEG422, or doesn't it matter which clutch kit I use?

Cheers!

The only difference is the size of the clutch plate (pre 90 is 180mm. 1990 onwards is 190mm Iirc) pressure plate and flywheel are the same for either size of clutch

My 1990 Cooper now has the pre-Verto flywheel & clutch and that is the best option really. The flywheel is already lighter than a standard Verto. Pre-Verto flywheels are easy to find. You also need a pre-Verto release bearing and bearing carrier and a pre-Verto clutch arm, cylinder and push rod.

If you're getting the full kit it won't matter. You just wouldn't want to put a 190mm plate against a cover that's rubbed against a 180mm plate. Everything else been equa,l go with extra 10mm it'll last a tad longer & pick up the benefit of the weight saving better.

Thanks guys!

I think I'll go for the 190mm dia clutch plate, as that is what is in there currently!

Cheers!

Is not quite as straight forward as bolting it all together.

The steel flywheels are usually not flat and need machining to ensure the friction surface is perfectly flat to get the optimum grip. Secondly the horn heights need adjusting to maximise grip.

Watch out for kits that come with substandard boss mounting bolts, avoid those that are unmarked or machined and replacement them with the correct grad 10.9 bolts available from minispares.

Lastly the assembly also needs balancing to ensure a smooth running unit.

Thanks ACDodd, great advice!

The engine builder will be doing the assy and balancing of the clutch and FW, so I'll pass on your advice.

I'll check out what bolts they are and get replacements if they are not marked / the wrong grade.

Cheers!

Hi all, i'd like to borrow this thread to ask a further question about flywheel balancing.

I have converted my engine from injection to carb and now want to replace the flywheel for a lighter item. I'm going to replace it with the C-AEG422 lightened item from mini spares. I will retain the pressure plate and clutch which is already the 190mm item.

Question is do i just have to get the new flywheel balanced or include the clutch and pressure plate

All of it. But pressure plate not really needed.

you also understand that your injection car will still need to pass the injection emissions test.

I have been running the car all year since the conversion and have managed to pass the mot emissions test. The garage I use is  very understanding.

I'll try and remove the clutch/flywheel assembly without taking the engine back out. Should have changed the flywheel during the first build, but funds were tight.

I would have expected the pressure plate to be included, but not the clutch plate, as this will wear and alter the balance, or am I missing something.

You'll probably find it easier to take the engine out - even though it seems like a lot of work

I've a small oil leak from the front of the engine, i think it's the timing chain cover, so pulling it out will make that easier as well.
