It seems that it should be obvious but before I buy a new chrome assembly k&n air filter I need to be sure whether to purchase an offset or centre holed item?

I have attached some photos of the current casing we have plus filter, plus lid plus the underside...

Can someone put me out of my misery on this?

many thanks!

If your replacement filter is a K&N pancake or cone filter that bolts to the carb mouth, then the offset hole allows the filter to sit a bit higher and stop it hitting the cross member when the engine moves back and forth. I would check with your supplier as it may vary with carb type. .

The chrome (cone/pancake type) are mounted with the 2 cross head screws that hold the carb elbow on.

Post a picture of the carb at the bulkhead side and the new filter.

If I'm fitting the cone or pancake type I fit the offset holed one to stop the bulkhead crossmember crushing it

What is the problem? It sits where it should on the locating ring.

Oh the pictures have nothing to do with the question.

neither just fit a KN element to that housing or if that is one in there already. Wash and re oil it.

Hi all.

Thanks for the replies, always great to get different views.

Here are the photos requested...

we were thinking of getting the chrome (not cone) from k&n, so this one which is the centre option.

we were hoping to eek out some more performance and maybe a better look though I appreciate that is open to opinion!

You need the filter to be offset upwards like this (the holes are offset downwards) so that the filter doesn't hit on the bulkhead

I put a cone K&N on my HS4 998 mini. Probably didn't make it any faster but it did sound great

You will need the offset filter for that set up, you need to remove that elbow from the carb and use the 2 screws to fit the filter.

Personally I'd use the standard filter box and drill the holes as required for better flow.
On my car I have to remove the dashpot piston from the carb, fit the filter box and then refit the piston.

might be worth considering one of these as an alternative to the pancake filter - £15 more than the K&N pancake, but does include a stubstack

I would use the standard filter box and drill the holes as per Calver Tuning recommendation and fit a K&N filter element.

I'm with the K&N filter in your (modded) standard airbox - a single carb will never look sexy like a pair does so go for the cheaper option. one of these finishers helps it look a little better.
