Fuel Starvation?

Best Answer ThermalEvent , 13 August 2021 - 04:57 AM

Just a thought but have you tried removing the fuel tank cap and then driving up a long hill? I could be way off the mark but it might be a partial vaccume in the fuel tank causing starvation? Go to the full post

Hi anyone had this problem, driving on level roads at any speed  no problem, however when driving up a long uphill road after a couple of hundred yards engine power goes  well down and will not rev, have checked floats in both carbs and they were not sticking Have 20/50 oil in dashpots  . (2 x 1 1/4 SUs) thanks Phil

I had this same problem on my wife's MG Metro in the 90's and it turned out to be the mechanical fuel pump (on the back of the block) must have been starving the engine of fuel under constant load. Took me ages to find the source of the problem

Next time the issue happens, shut off the car and coast to a stop (if it's safe to do so) while the pump is off

Take off the fuel bowl lids and check the level in the bowls

Hi, after check the float valves again and found no problems I refitted and went for a test run, traveled about 3/4 mile when engine power and revs went seriously down.  Shut down engine for 5 mins then switched ignition on, pump immediately started up filling the carbs.

managed to get it home with another stop as before. When home took lids off the bowls, one bowl full; the other as dry as a cork.

Decided to buy new float valves hope it resolves the problem, it just shows a visual inspection does not always find the fault

As most Minis have a tank vent if this fixes it you have a closed/blocked tank vert. Or you have the wrong cap.

On minis I have had over the years the tank vented into the boot as the rubber pipe had rotted away, out of sight out of mind,Steve..

So did it work properly before, or has the issue only just started happening?

If there are more than one fuel hose connection per fuel lid, are they all connected correctly?
