Hi, I have a 1990 998 City with the original airbox, including the air temperature control, but it is looking pretty rough.

Looking online I can't find new replacements anywhere, are these difficult to come by now?

The air temperature control is particularly rough looking; is there any benefit to keeping this on, or will it not affect things too much?

Has anyone done anything to improve the look of the original airbox? I'm wondering if I could remove the labels, give it a wash and then spray it to freshen it up a little.

Thanks for any help/thoughts!

EDIT: Part numbers are, I think, TAM2138 and 12G3210

The air filter housing does tend to look a bit tatty after 30 or more years. I gave mine a quick rub down and a coat of plastic bumper textured black paint. It looks brand new. The more coats you put on, the greater the texture.

The brand I used comes from Greece, so may not be available in the US, but I'm sure there will be something similar for plastic bumpers.

I've used a product called "Wurth bumper black" on tired looking automotive plastics before with good results, it dyes the plastic. I was thinking of doing the same to my airbox after a good scrub with soapy water. If i get round to it soon, I'll post back on how it went!

I've given mine a light sand with wet and dry and then re-finished with Solution Finish. Will see how it holds up.

Thanks for the ideas, definitely seems like a good clean then coating is the way to go.

Do you all have the air temperature control on yours still, or is there no problem removing it?

You mean the metal lump attached to the snorkel?  I've removed mine, it's just held on with a jubilee clip. What I haven't found is a trim piece to finish it off. I did fond one online, but have since lost the website.  If anyone has any ideas let me know.

I removed my air temp control and cut away all the twists and turns, in the plastic, to the airflow. This left large holes in the top, so I wrapped an off-cut of the carbon inlet tube, with Teflon, (the sort that you use in the oven to keep it clean). and filled both inside and out with flexible bumper repair. I removed the tube when set and peeled the Teflon off easily.  A bit of a rub down and spray to finish off. I now have flow the same size as the inlet tube right up to the filter element.

Yup, that's the one. I was wondering if I could cut off the excess trim piece to neaten it up, or maybe wrap it in something.
