Hi All

On a trip to fill up the Mini today, I noticed that my local garage has started to sell the new E10 petrol. This has sort of passed me by so far so having read a little bit about it on various forums I understand it is coming in in a couple weeks time.

Would appreciate some advice. Can this be used in the 998cc engine from 1989..... I understand the engine will still run ok with out change, however the extra ethanol will put strain on the rubber components and seals over a period of time? Otherwise is it worth switching to super unleaded which will still be E5 rated. I have never used the super unleaded, high octane fuel in the Mini before, but do use in my daily driver - as this is a modern higher performance engine.....

Use super unleaded, you may need to alter the timing slightly (if you get pinking or run on) but I didn't need to

Most garages are starting to label pumps as E10 now although it will still be E5 until 1st September when it is to be officially introduced. In future I will use super unleaded with E5 in.

Shell vpower still doesn't have ethanol in it, only thing I use.
As a precaution change all fuel hoses anyway. They're all old by now.

Maybe it is different in Belgium, but according to Shells UK website vpower is E5

There quote is "maximum 5% ethanol" for vpower

Oof, that's sad! About a year or maybe 2 ago it was still the same in the UK. Here they're still advertising as "is labeled as E5 but still contains 0% ethanol"

Esso Synergy Supreme is ethanol free in (the most poulated parts of) England.

From their Website https://www.esso.co....gb/fuels/petrol

"What’s in our Synergy Supreme+ 99 premium petrol

Our Synergy Supreme+ 99 petrol has more cleaning power than our regular petrol – and includes molecules whose job it is to reduce the friction in your engine helping the moving parts work more efficiently.*

Although our pumps have E5 labels on them, our Synergy Supreme+ 99 is actually ethanol free (except, due to technical supply reasons, in Devon, Cornwall, North Wales, North England and Scotland). Legislation requires us to place these E5 labels on pumps that dispense unleaded petrol with ‘up to 5% ethanol’, including those that contain no ethanol, which is why we display them on our Synergy Supreme+ 99 pumps.

There’s currently no requirement for renewable fuel, like ethanol, to be present in super unleaded petrol although this could change in the future, in which case we would comply with any new legislation."

Shell make no such claim, AFAIK.

Most classic car owners already use the 97/98 RON super unleaded with lead additic=ve is they need it.

There will be no issues until or unles they stop selling the higher octane petrol with a max of 5% ethanol.

At present it is not an issue.
