Removed the 998 engine out of my mini today and was wondering what people suggest would be worth replacing while the engines out ? As it will be out for sometime as the rest of the restoration is done.. was thinking clutch, waterpump timing chain etc? Thanks

I'd suggest most Gaskets and Seals, Oil Pump as well as items you've already mentioned.

How many miles were on it and what issues did it have when you last drove it ?

Core plugs!

I had one with a pinhole on my Midget and it was a right pig to sort. The thing would overheat and spit out all it's water, but only in certain circumstances and it turned out to be one of the core plugs. Rather than replace them they'd painted over them. They're cheap and it's an easy job.

The items you've mentioned and don't forget to renew engine mounts and stabiliser bushes.

Id also give the carb a clean up too whilst it's off the car, also consider a coolant syst flush and check the thermostat too

Get a lighter flywheel if you've got the budget - really makes a difference to performance of a 998

Although not engine related but in a way it is, check the upper stabiliser mount / bracket on the bulkhead crossmember and also check the mounting point on the engine to ensure the thread is in good condition.

This one of those questions that can lead to the answer, ‘If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.’ However, I would approach it with the idea to replace items that would be a pain to replace with the engine in place as Spider suggested; seals, gaskets, water pump & oil pump. Maybe have peek at the rod change seal. Also would be tempted to refresh the head.
