Do any Cooper experts know exactly when the Mk2 Cooper S 1275 gained the 4 synchro gearbox?

The John Parnell book gives us a definitive engine number when the 9F-SF-Y engine number sequence changed during Mk2 ‘S’ production to the 9F-XE-Y series denoting the new 4 synchro gearbox, however the engine number in the attached photo appears to show a number well past the change over, but with the earlier 3 synchro prefix.
Did the 3 synchro ‘box continue in production for some reason?

Mine was made Jan 68 and had a 3 Synchro box

According to my records, on the Cooper S, there was no 'hard' change over point. They started fitting them to some cars from October 1966 and it wasn't until September 68 that everyone off the line had them.

 

There was (supposedly) a hard change over on all other models in September 68.

That is a repro engine tag and 52000 engine number would have had a four synchro box and XE in place of the SA.

Mine's a SA - Y - 48000 engine from Jan 68 (late 67 build) with a 3 synchro 22A1522 box
