hi.
I'm refurbishing my rod gear housing
I found a small hole on the bottom cover
anyone know what it's is for or is it a defect?
water could probably enter I doubt though because it's facing down is it ti fill up with grease?

They all have that hole and I'm only guessing that hole was there to help in the factory get the cover on the right way around. I weld them up and seal the cover to the housing. I've had the one on my Moke like that for a while now and - touch wood - so far so good, even after a few deep creek crossings. I hesitated to make this move for a long while as it does mean any water that gets in elsewhere can't drain out. I'll add here that I do have a good sealing boot on the front too, where the Rod comes in to the shifter, but as yet, none on top where the gearstick fits.

I see I'm also thinking of welding it up.so that no water gets in.
it has been on the road for 33 years with no issues 😀

I always assumed it was drainage. There's no gasket so it probably would fill up if you went fording. I made a dinky cover plate to go under the nearest two screws
