Clicking / Rubbing Sound From Front Off Side When Turning Right Or Accelerating

Just rebuild my Cooper SPI - virtually all new mechanical parts and it drives great except a sort of clicking / rubbing sound from the front off side wheel.

 

This only happens when turning right or when under load ( acceleration) turning left or coasting it goes quiet.  The noise also seem to be proportional to wheel speed and not engine speed so suspect something on the drive shaft somewhere.

 

The car has just passed MOT where the tester gave everything a good pull and push to check for play etc - all seemed good.

 

I have used new inner and outer joints and and replaced with Timken bearings and the hub was tightned down to correct torque using the big washer first to ensure the bearing was correctly seated before final tightening of the hub nut.

 

any thoughts ?

The first thing that enters my head is the wheel bearing being not quite right straight out of the box or the drive flange not being torqued up.

Were the hub bearing faces free from any marks/rings of any other damage. Were the bearing outers pressed into the hub and not hammered.

Did you lightly pinch up the new bearing assembly without grease to check the clearance as it may be too tight.

Was the new outer CV a snug fit in the bearings.

Of course it could be as simple as the boot clip on the outer CV is hitting the hub and it could be the brake pads that are a little loose in the caliper and catching on the disc allows them to float enough to make a ticking noise.

Hello - Thanks for the suggestions:

 

How do you check for clearance once all assembled and torqued up ?

 

I bought Timkin bearings and assembled keeping the parts matched as instructed so I hope they are correct ( I decided to stay clear of cheaper front bearings for this very reason) but of course they may be faulty.

 

The whole assembly was torqued up correctly 

 

The bearings were pressed in to the hub after ensuring is was meticulously clean 

 

 

I think I will remove the hub and check all parts again - I did fid a good article here

I'm actually inclined to suspect something easier to get at here.

 

Have a good look at any weights that might be on the inside of that wheel, they might be contacting the caliper when under that type of load, or it may even have a crack (in a weld on it assuming steel but alloys can be cracked too). If you can't find anything cracked, maybe swap the front wheels and see it the noise moves.
