Hi all, I'm new here.

I've just acquired an abandoned lockdown project - a Mk2 woody estate.

I'm considering popping in van sides instead of windows but still fitting the wood frame.

But does anyone know if this will work? I can't find a woody local to me to look at, and mine has no wood at all (previous owner binned just about everything including all the wood and anything with chrome on it, intending to buy all-new. How nice to be so wealthy.)

Key question is: would the wood fit flush against the van inserts, or would it leave a horrible gap? Would the neat "indent" that runs around the edge of the van panel be visible, or would it be hidden under the wood? Would there be a large channel between wood and metal (where the window channels used to be) that would gather water?

Trouble is that I just can't picture how it fits together without having the wood to offer-up against the shell... but the shell is 200 miles away at a workshop. And the wood is on back-order. The workshop need me to tell them whether to fit the van sides before painting.

by the way: For those worried about the sacrilegious loss of heritage by 'vanning' it... the sides would be GRP and bonded in a removable way, so nothing would be done to prevent it being returned to 'proper' eventually.

Cheers,
Ian.
