As the title really.

I`ve just come back from a whizz around in the MK2 and 7 miles in the clutch pedal feel a bit strange along with a stiffening of the gear change.

I gave it a good ignoring and gave the throttle a blip that seemed to improve the gear change.

On getting home and having a quick look at the pedal I found the clevis pin and R clip on the rubber matt.

I have never used R clips on the brake master cylinder but I know a lot of people do but I did use one on this clutch cylinder through laziness as it seemed too short and stiff to be able to be popped off but there you go.

So if you have R clips now might be the time to put a split pin back in.

Others have said the same, I know one who nearly went over a cliff on the Minis to Monte.

Yes, one needs to be very careful if using R Clips.

There are R Clips and there are R Clips !

Only the short one at the top here is safe to fit.

All our Local Production from the late 60's were fitted with R Clips to the end of production. For what ever it's worth, I use them and would never go to Split Pins, though, I too did find out long ago that not all R Clips can be used !

What makes it safe / unsafe to fit?

It does not interfere with anything. The lager ones can contact parts of the surrounding metal work.  Stopping movement or being pushed out of the pin leaving it free to fall out.

I see, so it's not the use of the clip per se, it's if they are too big, they can catch and be pushed out. Thank you

Correct. As Spider says they were OE fitted in Aus. If the same spec ones are fitted you will not have issues.

I was in the Lawn mower trade which uses R Clips throughout. If any one's having difficulties sourcing an appropriate one then drop in at one of my fellow specialists and see what he can offer

I use the R clips sourced from Somerfords with no issues, looks to be the same size as those recommended by Spider.

The R Clips pop out of the Pin if they are too long. They spin about over time and you can be sure at some point in time, it will align it's self perfectly so when you take your foot off the Brake (or Clutch), the Clip will hit the bottom of inside of the Bulk Head and then,,,,,,,,

I have looked at Somerfords and the one for pedals looks the same size as the one that fell out of mine so out of curiosity how long are the RCLIP01 ?

Mine is 19 mm or 3/4" in proper measurement.

https://www.somerfor...rds=clevis clip

I`ve just answered my own question by looking a Spiders post, it`s the same length as mine.

I think there is more than one length of push rod and mine is super close to the bulkhead so I suppose a 3/4" washer with a 5/6" hole behind the R clip would make it impossible to pop out by hitting the bulkhead.

Also if the R clip was tight against the push rod face and the push rod and or pedal hole were elongated due to wear ( not mine ) it would only take 1/8" of movement if the R clip was aligned with the direction of travel to pop the pin out ?

Anyway i`m off to put my split pin in  :D

..only if the hole in the washer under the R-clip was similarly elongated.  assuming of course you have fitted a washer under it...

I have found the issue was caused by my push rod length as it was long enough to wear a little dent into the bulkhead.

I had a small washer on it but a 3/4" one would have saved the agro.

That`s lube not fluid by the way.

Now fixed and back to a monster 5/8" of slave cylinder travel :)

No washer as I couldn`t find one thin enough as the split pin was a chunky one but now it`s not going anywhere.

Yes or course, the washer would stop this happening  :shy:

I guess I over thought that one and it turns out my rod length was to blame.

How so?  The master cylinder rod/plunger?  Which master cylinder have you got fitted?
